I believe each student has the innate desire to succeed in their daily tasks.  Some of them do not know how to get the job accomplished, some do not know how to begin.   Every student can learn, but perhaps not in the same way or even on the same day.    

For the past five years, I have been teaching at alternative schools to help students earn their course credits through computer courses, direct instruction, and one-on-one tutoring.

Donna Cross has been at Somerset Academy for three years. Ms. Cross attended Florida State University for her undergraduate degree and Dominican University in Chicago, Illinois for her Master’s degree. Ms. Cross began teaching in Chicago, where she taught middle school math. She moved to Jacksonville and became a part of the Somerset family, teaching History and English for the Middle School and High School. Ms. Cross is the Cheerleading coach as well as SGA, Art Club, Journalism, Yearbook, and Drama Club Sponsor. Her hobbies include cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, training for triathlons, surfing, playing volleyball, and trivia.

My name is Yolanda Davis and I am originally from the Bronx, New York. I graduated from SUNY Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and a concentration in Math and psychology. I began working in education as a teaching assistance working closely with the Educational Opportunity Program for incoming freshman students at SUNY Binghamton.  I fell in love with teaching and math once I started teaching in the Bronx at Citizen Schools extended learning program grades 6-8th in 2008. There I started as the Academic Program lead designing the math curricula for the extended day as well as the math coach for the extended day teachers and teaching a hip hop ballet class. My hobbies are dancing, writing and going to the beach. I believe tremendously in setting and holding our youth to high expectations so that they can achieve and accomplish more than they believe they can. As said by Maria Montessori “All children can learn” and it is my duty to ensure that our students get the best education in a learner friendly environment.

I teach Social Studies classes at Somerset Academy Middle & High charter schools.  Having been both an administrator and a teacher during my 8-years in public and charter schools, I try to run a fun, safe, and educationally-rich classroom with focus on main ideas and causes.  When teaching, I try to incorporate textbooks along with hands-on lessons and activities because overall I want my students to become better people and citizens, not just to remember historical dates and names from the past.

In my classroom, students are treated with respect and they are expected to show respect to their fellow classmates and the school staff.  Helping students do better and achieve greater things than they thought possible has always been my goal.  I want my students to feel challenged and to experience satisfaction of  having met those challenges successfully.  I believe that EVERYONE can learn and improve, and this is what I challenge my students to do.
